Myths-Busting Facts about Epilepsy

During one of my group session high school students curiously asked what were the steps to be taken while the person has epilepsy. So today I am going to talk about few myths and facts that we have when we see people with epilepsy and how to provide them support to be independent in there own ways.

 #Myth 1

Epilepsy medicines are life long

 Fact:Depending on the type of epilepsy,frequency and severity the medicines are recommended.Each individual respond differently hence for few it goes away in few years and for some have to continue life long medicines to keep in control.Hence follow doctors instruction and not to stop medicine unless advised by doctor.

#Myth 2

People having epilepsy attack attacks can be given onion or slippers to smell.

 Fact: Not to use such things as it doesn’t really help.One can make sure that the tongue doesn’t get cut. Other things one can do is stay calm, cushion there head if they have collapsed on ground. Do not hold them and not to put anything in there mouth. Its important to talk to them calmly and quietly.

#Myth 3

People having epilepsy cannot work.

Fact: Depending upon the severity level one can choose vocation that is not exhausting for individual at physical and mental level.One can avoid working under any heavy machines or factories which may be physically hazardous.One can choose work from home as well based on skills.Its important to talk about your medical condition at work.For that you should be okay with your health condition and communicate to others without any hesitation.

#Myth 4

People having epilepsy can not get married

Fact: With medical guidance from your doctor about your health condition,adherence to treatment and being clear about your health condition to other family  helps in marriage alliance.Healthy communication and being transparent helps to get good support instead of hiding this condition. Remember this you are unique . Don’t let this condition define you.
